As someone deeply immersed in interior design, I never imagined I'd be stuck with a bland, uninspiring guest room. But after moving into my suburban home, the guest room ended up being an afterthought.
Rather than a sanctuary for visitors, it was a place where all the random, leftover furniture found a home. From my mother's old dresser to a rescued rug I found on the streets of New York City, the space was as cluttered as it was uninspiring.
The walls were painted a calming grayish-blue, Benjamin Moore's “Silver Mist”, and I furnished the space with secondhand pieces that matched the tone. I chose a secondhand bed, added basic white curtains, and used simple, neutral bedding that didn't reflect much personality. The room was practical, yes, but lacked any visual charm.
I knew the space had potential, but I needed a few key elements to make it truly inviting and add the right dose of charm. That's when I turned to Anthropologie. Their selection was exactly what I needed: beautiful, timeless pieces that transformed my guest room into a cozy, chic haven. There was no need for repainting or expensive renovations—just some new bedding, a stylish lamp, and a few art pieces did the trick.
The star of the makeover? The Hale Canvas Bed in the Irena pattern. The bed's gorgeous climbing vine design immediately caught my eye. The green tones and subtle floral motifs felt both modern and timeless, and the pattern added a natural, almost whimsical vibe to the room. It's a piece that could seamlessly fit into a minimalist or maximalist space, giving the room a cohesive, fresh feel.
What's more, the bed is crafted from poplar and beechwood, reinforced with engineered hardwood, and finished with canvas inlay. Not only does it have a beautiful, textured look, but it's also perfect for smaller spaces thanks to its streamlined design. Plus, despite the lack of padding, the bed frame is surprisingly comfortable with the help of plenty of pillows.
Next, I turned my attention to the bedding. Since the bed already had a statement-making design, I decided to keep the duvet simple and solid. The Taylor Organic Cotton Percale Embroidered Duvet and Shams were the perfect choice. The white duvet with subtle green embroidery matched the bed's color palette, while the cotton fabric added a fresh, luxurious feel.
I added fun printed sheets from Anthropologie's MindTheGap collection in a soft pink pattern, which complemented the green tones of the bed and gave the room a playful yet cozy atmosphere. For extra comfort, I layered in a few additional pillows, including a forest green corduroy cushion and a floral one from the Irena collection.
Once I had the bed and bedding sorted, it was time to add some visual impact with the right accessories. I decided to go with a subtle pattern drenching approach, adding touches of the Irena print to the curtains and lamp shades. The Irena Cotton Linen Blackout Curtains perfectly framed the windows, while the Shirred Printed Fabric Drum Lamp Shade on a Burgundy Jug Ceramic Table Lamp added a burst of color without overwhelming the space.
For the final touches, I went all-in on a travel-inspired gallery wall. As a lover of Paris and England, I chose artwork that reflected my favorite destinations. Above the bed, I placed a giclée print of “The View From the Square”, which captured the green tones in the room beautifully. The photograph felt like a nod to the Tuileries Garden in Paris, which tied in perfectly with the cottage-inspired aesthetic I was aiming for.
I finished the gallery wall with a small mirror and a sage green plaster wall charm—both from Anthropologie—adding a little vintage flair to the room. The charm even depicted the Louvre, which was a fun touch for a space that pays homage to my love for travel.
With just a few thoughtful purchases, the guest room went from being a neglected space to a cozy, inviting haven. The combination of nature-inspired patterns, beautiful linens, and personal touches gave the room a timeless yet trendy feel. I can't wait for my first guests to experience the transformation.
This refresh shows that even small changes—like switching out bedding or adding a pop of pattern—can completely transform a space. What once felt like a mismatched collection of hand-me-downs is now a guest room I'm proud to share.
